Skills Required for Pattern Maker

Skills helps a person to do work in a good way. Skills can be acquired by practice, experience and training.  In pattern, making department pattern maker can work more efficiently if he/she has the following skills. So, if you are interested to do career in pattern making then the following skills you must acquire as soon as possible.

Understand Tech Pack and Design

The pattern maker should understand the tech pack and design thoroughly so that he/she can understand the number of patterns to be made in the product.

Manual Pattern Making

Now almost all the industries works with the pattern making software. Even to make pattern in software, pattern maker must possess knowledge of manual pattern making, as manual pattern making is the base.

Good in Measurements

Pattern maker always use measurement tape for various body or product measurements, a small error in measurement may lead to a big problem. To avoid such problems pattern maker must be accurate in taking measurements

Good in Mathematics

Pattern maker should be good in basic mathematics, especially in addition and subtraction on measurement tape. Most of the industries give measurement in inches, and pattern maker should be good in adding or subtracting 1/16 inch, 1/8 inch, ¼ inch, ¾ inch ,1/2 inch etc.

Good in Software

Pattern maker must have the knowledge of any modern pattern making software used for pattern making. Now a day all the apparel manufacturing works with computerized pattern making so if pattern maker knows any one software of pattern very well then he/she can learn any other pattern maker software very speedily.

Product Knowledge

He/she must possess the knowledge of the product he/she is going to produce. In depth knowledge of product will help pattern maker to solve problems.

Good in Accuracy

If the patterns are accurate then only the product will be perfect. The pattern maker should be accurate and responsible while pattern making.

Problem Solving

Pattern maker must possess problems solving skill for e.g. If any problem occurs and measurements are going out of tolerance after stitching or at quality checking then pattern maker should able to solve these problems by making necessary/required changes in the pattern.

Stitching

It will be beneficial if the pattern maker knows stitching so that he/she can predict the problems that may come to the operator while stitching and before only a necessary step can be taken to avoid the future problems.

The above skills will help pattern maker to do his/her work nicely and accurately.
